The Friday Phrase

Fabulous idioms for Friday Afternoon

Today’s idiom is ‘off the beaten track‘.

Somewhere that’s off the beaten track is in a remote location.

So if like Chloe and her aunt and uncle Ned and Sheila, you are going somewhere off the beaten track this weekend, enjoy yourself and tell us all about it when you return!

A Word for Wednesday

Today’s word is ‘seasoned‘, an adjective we use to describe someone who has a lot of experience in a certain area.

Judging by the map hanging in his kitchen, on which he had marked a blue dot in every location he had ever visited, there was no doubt that Sebastian was a seasoned traveller.

Or a seasoned something else perhaps?

The Weekly Wish

Happy Monday everyone!

This week I wish you a colourful and convivial week.

To practise your English why not share a colourful account of a convivial gathering you have attended.

And remember: not only can the same adjective have more than one meaning but, as always, if you don’t know the adjectives of the week you can look them up on www.dictionary.com and then use them here or in your next class!

A Thought for Thursday

A little something to think about when using English 🙂

Continuing on from yesterday, our thought today turns to the wonderful world of work.

As we have mentioned in a past post, in English you work on a project.
Seeing as variety is the spice of life (even when it comes to prepositions, it seems) you work in a sector but for a company.

Otherwise, you might be self employed, unemployed, retired or living a life of leisure somewhere near the sea… seaWhat sector do you work in or would like to work in? Tell us about it and practise your English!

A Word for Wednesday

Today’s word is cushy, an adjective we use to describe a job that is undemanding, easy and involves little effort for big rewards (and it may be useful to note that this word can have slightly pejorative connotations).

Mable, for example, has the cushy job of supervising the cushions here at The English Garden, yet is the first to complain about how hard she works.

cushyWhat are the advantages and disadvantages of a cushy job?
Do you have one?
Would you like one?

Tell us about it and practise your English!

A Tip for Tuesday

Today’s tip is about combining two essential activities: learning and interior design.

A good way to learn (or remind yourself of) basic vocabulary for everyday things is by using post-it notes.

Sticking them on objects in and around the house will help remind you of the words every time you see them as well as add a touch of neon to your home decor 🙂
